Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) is a hardy, evergreen native to South Africa. It stores water in its small fleshy leaves and thick reddish stems, making it highly drought tolerant and easy to care for.
It grows quickly in warm, sunny environments and responds well to pruning and shaping. It is ideal for bonsai styling because of its compact size and bushy growth.
It tolerates heavy pruning and produces dense foliage pads over time.
A feature of Spekboom is that it can absorb up to 4.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide per hectare annually, making it highly effective at tackling climate change (10 times more effective than some rainforests). Thus supporting a healthier environment while adding beauty to your collection.
